The custom designer rug process:
The Rug Establishment is recognised around the world for their experience in custom designer floor rugs and hall runners. Specifically we specialise in custom handcrafted rugs including hand-knotted, hand-tufted and hand-loomed rugs.
Working closely with experienced artisans and crafters, The Rug Establishment team with their knowledge of different fibres, textures, qualities, shapes, colours and sizes, can help bring your design vision to life. This means when you order a custom rug in The Rug Establishment Mill Valley, San Francisco showroom (rug store), you will be creating a work of art using premium materials and can rest assured they are crafted ethically.
A custom area rug means it can be ordered in a custom size, custom colour, custom design and custom shape like round rugs and hall runners.
The Consultation Process:
- The first step (after measuring your space) is to choose a design you absolutely love from our Custom & Bespoke page. If you have your own design, please email it through and we will consult to ensure we can meet your needs.
- During this initial process, we will discuss the specifications of your rug - what it is being used for, where it will be laid, the climate where you live, who will be using it and any budget we need to take into consideration plus most importantly is it a round rug, square rug, rectangular rug, hallway runner rug, wool rug, jute rug or any other rug you can dream of...all these factors determines how we specify the right rug for you. After establishing your exact needs we will discuss the cost and timeframe for the making of your rug.
- Then comes the fun part of choosing the colours either from poms with one of our Design Consultants in the showroom or through our specialised online rug design tool.
- Once we have these details, our design specialist then creates a “drawing” representative of what your rug will look like. Drawings are created so that you can visualise the end product and so that our mill will know exactly how to handcraft your rug!
- The final step in the consultation process is to sign off on your drawing and process the deposit before the manufacturing begins.
The Stages:
There are many stages in the art of rug making but the main stages are: processing the yarn, dyeing, preparing loom, weaving and finishing before leaving the mill. Please note that production time does not include time set aside for Microseal or transit and is dependant on many factors such as the weather as our rugs are dried in the sun. (See our Process of Making a Rug blog for more information.)
Most likely, your rug will be made in our Bhadohi mill in India, also known as "Carpet City," home to the largest hand-knotted carpet weaving industry hub. International transit usually takes 7 to 10 days but can vary depending on location. Don’t worry, we will be in touch with you once your rug is on its way to organise delivery.
Although creating your own custom rug can take some time, the end product is worth the wait and no doubt will become a treasured piece of your home.

The Rug Establishment prides itself on its high level of customer service, we achieve this by providing detailed warranty for each and every customer plus specifications around your custom purchase.
