The Lowdown on Natural Fibre Rugs

18 November 2015

Natural fibre rugs are an increasingly popular rug choice because they're more effective at absorbing materials, reducing allergens and are eco-friendly. Their natural elements make them biodegradable, recyclable and renewable. Although they're quite neutral in colour, their natural texture keeps things interesting.

What are natural fibre rugs?

Our natural fibre rugs are made from seagrass, sisal, jute and coir.

Seagrass

Seagrass material grows in the rice fields and riverbanks of Asian countries, making it resistant to most spills and water stains. They're usually not dyed and are sold in their natural shades that typically have a greenish tint at the start but over time, fade to a tannish colour. Seagrass rugs are recommended for high traffic areas like entryways and hallways.

Sisal

Made from an agave plant in Central America, sisal rugs have a tight, consistent weave pattern. They're more likely to stain than the other natural fibre rugs, so are not recommended in the kitchen or kids' rooms.

Tangier Jute

While jute is the least durable of the natural fibre rugs, it is softest underfoot. Made from the stem of a plant grown in Bangladesh, this material is naturally shiny and has anti-static properties. No fertilisers are used in growing jute, making them one of the most eco-friendly options. Jute rugs are recommended for medium traffic, especially bedrooms because they're soft.

Coir

Coir is made by spinning the processed fibres of the outer husk of coconuts grown on the swaying palms of India. Coir rugs are strong and durable, perfect for high traffic areas.

FAQs

Are natural fibre rugs durable?

Coir, seagrass and sisal, tough fibres renowned for strength and durability, were once widely used for ship ropes before synthetic fibres. Jute is a soft and illustrious material better suited to light footfall areas. All natural fibres are moisture sensitive and need to be used away from dampness.

How long will natural fibre rugs last?

Natural fibre flooring can last from 5 to 10 years and more. Excessive moisture, heat, or rough wear and tear can shorten the life of your flooring. However correct installation, a gentle environment and care, will ensure longer lasting flooring.

What is "normal" maintenance for natural fibre rugs?

A good vacuum will suffice for regular cleaning. Never use a wet carpet cleaning system because shrinkage or water marking may occur.

Will the colours fade on my natural fibre rug?

All natural fibres lose colour and fade over time, especially in direct sunlight. It's best to avoid placing dark natural flooring in intensely bright areas. Natural floor coverings are generally intended for indoor use.
