Investing in a rug can be a daunting task if you have no idea what you’re looking for. Here are some handy tips and questions to ask yourself before visiting the showroom or buying online to help you decide which rug to go for.
Striking custom Capri Mazuma in this living room by A Designer's Life
The first thing you should know is where your rug is going. Popular spaces are the living room, bedroom, under a dining table, in the hallway and entryway. For example, a hallway rug automatically means it will be a custom rug since we don’t hold stock of runners because we want it to fit perfectly.
Measure the area your rug is going. This is the most important step! Most of our stock ranges typically come in sizes: 1600mm x 2300mm, 1900mm x 2900mm, 2400mm x 3000mm and 3000mm x 4000mm keeping in mind that majority of our designs can be custom made.

When it comes to size, generally the bigger the rug, the larger it makes the room appear and is more effective in creating a defined space particularly in open plan living areas. If your rug is going under a dining table, we recommend having at least 850mm around the table so that the legs of the chairs still sit on the rug when pulled out. See our Where to Place an Area Rug blog for more on rug placement and sizing.
Bright and bold with Stratus by Campbell Wake Interior Design & Styling
Next thing to think about is the colour. Do you want something subtle in a neutral colourway, a statement piece or something bold that pops? Are you after a particular pattern or design? Do you want something plain, abstract, traditional, floral, striped or classic? Think of your overall interior style, colour scheme, furniture and how you want it to look.
