Oriental Mamluk rugs originated from Cairo, Egypt during the 13th to 16th century. The Mamluk sultans were brought over from the Middle East as slave soldiers and trained to be elite palace guards. Instead, they overthrew their Arab rulers and went on to rule for two centuries with a thriving carpet industry.
Mamluks traditionally only came in bright red, pale blue and light green with complex designs and medallions with a ornate cartouches or frames. Our Sentani and Kamet rugs are contemporary takes on the traditional mamluks with blue the dominant colour.
Hand knotted by master weavers, both of these rugs are sized at approximately 2400mm by 3000mm. Kamet and Sentani feature beautiful design motifs and delicate detailing to create a lavish statement.
