Hand tufted rugs are considered a modern way of making hand made rugs. These rugs have the same appearance from the front as hand knotted rugs but are created without tying knots. The Rug Establishment’s hand tufted rugs are extremely durable since they are made from the same quality of New Zealand wool, art silk and yarns as our hand knotted rugs.
First the wool is dyed in colourfast chrome dyes. Then the design is hand drawn to scale and transferred to a mesh backing that is stretched on a frame. The tufts are created by pushing yarn through the mesh backing with a tool called a ‘hand tufter’ or ‘tufting gun’ which holds the yarn and pushes it through.
Tufting Gun
A latex glue is applied to hold the tufts in place before being covered by a cloth backing to protect your floor. Like hand knotted rugs, the final steps include washing, drying, shearing the yarn loops and hand carving the tops of the tufts to create the pile and finished rug. The pile height is determined by how much yarn is cut off and how far the yarn was tufted through.
Although it generally takes less time to produce a hand tufted rug in comparison to a hand knotted rug, it still requires a high level of craftsmanship to efficiently and accurately portray the intricate designs.
