Decorating with Blue Rugs

2 March 2016

The number one favourite colour, blue is a popular colour in interior design, so it's no wonder that it is also a highly accepted colour. It has a calming effect, reduces stress and is associated with relaxation, peacefulness, cleanliness and order.

Using blue creates different effects depending on its shade. While lighter blues are more calming, dark blue is associated with authority, trust and intelligence. Nevertheless, "Blue is the only colour which maintains its own character in all its tones…It will always stay blue," wrote Fauvist painter Raoul Dufy.

Warm blues that contain hints of red like denim, ocean blue or slate blue generally advances, making a room cosier. This means designer rugs like our Temple Denim would look great in social spaces like the living room, kitchen or dining rooms.

Cool blues like cobalt, ice blue and turquoise have yellow in them and tend to recede, making a space look bigger. A strong colour like turquoise works well with black accents, while a bold teal rug or mat provides opportunity to incorporate an eclectic mix of furnishings, accessories and textiles.

Blue rugs encourage calmness in the bedroom and focus in the office. If you're mixing different shades of it, a hint of green in robin's egg blue adds warmth to a palette of cooler blues.

For a timeless look, go with the popular blue and white choice. This colour scheme is fresh and crisp while also refined and elegant. It's been around for centuries, from being synonymous with coastal living and sophisticated schemes, to Ancient Greece and China.
