The living room is one of the rooms you spend the most time in and definitely the room your guests get to experience most. But having a small space to work with is a challenge, so we've put together a list of tips to help you design and make the most of a small living room.
Choose furniture carefully. Avoid bulky furniture and opt for pieces with a lightweight appearance. Go for furniture with thin, exposed legs and open bottoms so it doesn't obstruct the views of the floor to make the space feel more open. Think Scandinavian.
Scale it down. Bigger isn't always better, large furniture will actually shrink a room, so pick small-scale furniture for a small living room. You can actually do without a couch completely and go for a loveseat or a few chairs instead. Another tip is to go for see-through furniture and glass tables because they consume little visual space.
Lighten it up. White is a great colour for reflecting light and adding visual space, so if you have dark floors cover it up with a light-coloured area rug. Draw the eye up. While horizontal rugs make a room seem larger, similarly vertical stripes make a room seem taller. So hang curtains from the ceiling rather than directly above the windows to draw the eye upward to create an illusion of extra space. Play up the light too and avoid blocking up the windows with heavy curtains.
It's all in the details. Make the details count because the eye will be drawn to the details whether that be a bold throw or rug, artwork or patterned pillows, rather than the close quarters. Be careful not to make it seem cluttered with too much going on and try to stick to a consistent colour palette!
