How to Add a Touch of Vintage to Your Home

25 March 2016

Every room is just a space until character and a personal touch is added. Adding vintage items is an easy way of adding distinctive style and makes any room feel more warm and welcoming.

Items with meaning like old family heirlooms and mementos are a good place to start. It's really the small things that add big personality. Check out the local op shops and markets first before heading to vintage and antique stores. You'll find unique pieces and most likely save lots!

Or why not try making something yourself? You could reupholster an old chair or customise a coffee table. Who knows, you might even unearth a secret talent you never knew you had or better yet, discover a new hobby.

You could try blending old and new furniture and go for a few unique furniture pieces like side tables, chairs or mirrors. They're easy to incorporate into a contemporary themed house, making great accent pieces. Don't go overboard either, try to keep a balance and remember, less is more.

If you don't want an eclectic room, go with a soft, cottage-style look like the relaxed, classy shabby chic style. This style generally involves items that are genuinely old and instead of going out of fashion, their wear and tear only adds more character. Shabby chic also works well with beach and French country styles.

Don't be afraid of colour. Most modern homes have a neutral colour palette with white walls and clean lines. Bring in some colour to break up the monotony; it can be as easy as using pops of colour, using bright pillows and throws, having an area rug or even a painting and using wallpapers.

Lastly, don't forget the kitchen. Adding a touch of vintage to your kitchen can be as easy as having a collection of classic tins in a pastel colour scheme, adding shabby chic furniture, repurposing lights, or perhaps using vintage pitchers to store cooking utensils.

Most importantly, don't feel like you have to match all your décor to what's in style. Your home is your sanctuary, it's where you go after a long day at work so it should make you feel relaxed and calm, as well as inspire and reflect you.
