Rugs define a space, emphasises a room's arrangement and add comfort, style and artistic value to it. Without proper care and protection, they won't retain their value or last long at all. Here are a few tips on maintaining your rug.
Vacuuming
This is a given but regular vacuuming is the best option to ensuring your rug is clean and lasts longer. Some rugs shed more than others so frequent vacuuming is a must. To get the best results:
- Vacuum your rug at least once a week
- Use a new vacuum bag or empty it out before starting
- Take all your furniture and obstacles off the rug
- Vacuum the floor underneath the rug
- Use a normal vacuum head on the rug because a rotating head can cause irreparable damage
Sunlight
All rugs, carpets and mats are sensitive to sunlight and will fade if exposed or prolonged for long periods of time in it. This is usually slow, but eventually the rug can be irreversibly damaged with a dulling of the colours and sometimes even a colour change. Sunlight in Australia is particularly harsh, even in winter and can have a bleaching effect on rugs.
- Place your rug away from direct sunlight
- Close your curtains
- Use rug protectors
- If your rug is getting too much exposure, consider adding window treatments to shade them from the sun
Rotating
Rotating your rug can help from showing wear and tear in one spot. Rotate your rug regularly if sunlight falls on one area to equalise the effects. This should also be done in rooms with higher-traffic areas so that all the foot traffic isn't in one place.
No Shoes
It's already a norm in most households to take off your shoes when you head inside. Not walking on rugs with shoes on will help protect your rug from mud and dirt. Otherwise have an outdoor entrance mat.
