What are Hand Knotted Rugs?

13 April 2016

Rugs are all different. They can be hand knotted, hand tufted, hand woven (also known as hand loomed) or machine-made. The process to create these rugs, the complexity, the time, skill level required to make the rugs and costs are all different. The Rug Establishment's rugs are all hand made.

Most of our rugs are hand knotted with an eclectic mix of vintage and contemporary designs. Hand knotted rugs usually follow the traditional process of rug making, requiring skill and often, a lot of time to produce. Hand knotting rugs are a centuries' old skill passed down by many generations to modern artisans. Our own weavers' heritage can be traced back over 300 years.

Weaving can take many weeks depending on the design, colours, fibres chosen and the shape of the rug. Every knot is individually hand tied, with the master weavers following a hand drawn design map to complete the design with accuracy.

The number of knots per square inch (or 2.54cm) determines the quality of a hand knotted rug. This is also known as density and the higher the density, the better quality the rug is. Our hand knotted rugs are available in 60, 80 and 100 knots with most of them Tibetan or Persian knotted.

How hand knotted rugs are made:

1. Drawing the design map to scale by hand.

2. Dyeing the yarn with colourfast chrome dyes.

3. Weaving by highly skilled artisans.

4. Washing and drying.

5. Carving and shaving the rug expertly by hand.

6. Finishing, hand stitching and edging.
