What is the perfect rug for my dining area?

7 January 2020

The right rug choice for your dining room needs careful consideration to enhance your decor as well as being practical in an area that gets frequent use and has furniture and shoes dragged over it.

Some points to remember as a guide:

* the size
* the composition and manufacturing process
* the colour and design

The basic recommendation is to allow 60-70cms on all sides added to the dimensions of your table to allow for the chairs to be pulled out adequately without catching on the edge of the rug. In the large open plan style homes of today the rugs will define the space for you and achieve balance in the room allowing open ‘passage areas’ to frame your furniture.

Composition:

Hand knotted rugs like The Rug Establishment range of Milford and Emori perform well in dining room applications as they are 7/7 Persian knot and all wool. We also supply hand woven cut to length rugs that are easily customised to the right size and are cost effective. Sencillo is a versatile new plain style that comes in a range of colours to co-ordinate with other rug designs, upholstery, cushions and artwork. The Cassia collection does the same, has a textured mottled effect that is hard wearing and suited to complement the other decor elements in the room.

For the formal dining room where some silk would add lustre and sophistication, our high end Cumulus, Pyrenees or Claremont rugs have been used very successfully along with other 12/12 Persian or 120 Tibetan knot designs in our extensive range. The added advantage of these higher knot rugs is acoustically they absorb the sound and reduce the echo effect in large spaces where there are floor tiles or polished concrete over a large expanse.

Colour and Design:

Your choice is limitless. You may want a stand alone dramatic piece that anchors the dining suite and adds drama to the room. As with the image seen above, the rug can co-ordinate with the artwork drawing the colour theme together and subtly referencing the pattern. Bear in mind when choosing a design that much of the rug is hidden by the table and the chairs so an all over pattern that can be seen from all sides is recommended. Border designs work particularly well and so do geometrics with modern style dining suites. Try to limit the amount of silk in your choice of design as cleaning spills is easier with wool. The chair legs being pulled in and out from the table can also sometimes damage and pull the less robust silk fibres. A deeper colour and some pattern or texture is preferable for ‘camouflaging’ minor spills and marks from everyday use.
